I thought it was very sunny there - from last summer. It seems like a nice neighbourhood and the Jamaica Plain Principle is a good and friendly one. Bumping into people you know is nice.

Truly fascinating. Seems to be a variation on walking around Times Square in NYC and invariably bumping into someone you know. Now I'm afraid to go to either Times Square OR Jamaican Plain . . . I just know I'll bump into my ex-wife. Talk about a "Vortex of Improbability"... scary!

Also, I can corroborate that the Jamaica Plain Principle is, as you've discovered and amply proven, is not limited to Jamaica Plain (the vortex only centering there). It applies to small Southern towns in the Commonwealth of vuh-GIN-yuh.

I'd like to propose a similar principle that has something to do with library school. Because damn do I know a lot of folks, JP residents and otherwise, who know each other through library school. Like me. And my roommate. And my girlfriend. And my college roommate. And my college roommate's roommate. Really.

I've been to Jamaica Plain and I'm from Wyoming but live in Orlando, FL now. And yes, I do know someone there so the Jamaica Plain principle can be confirmed from my end.
I watched this video the other day and I thought "yea ok, maybe it happens to her there, but never where I live." I leave work and stop by megalomart. I step out of the car and there is someone I know parked next to me. Then I stopped to pick up some spiced rum and run into the man that built my house who I haven't seen in 8 years. I get in my car to head home and as I'm pulling out of the parking lot, Wendy G is pulling in. Now I'm thinking "This isn't Jamaica Plains is it?" No. This leads me to the theory that in fact you are not the observer of this principle, but the root cause of the effect. I think you are the vortex and we are all being sucked in.
Welcome to small neighborhood living. Try living in a state like South Dakota or Kansas where EVERYBODY knows you, your family, and your friends.

I can't leave the house without running into people I know either. In fact I have randomly seen people I know in airports all over the world and bumped into friends while visiting Atlanta and NYC. Crazy...
I just went to JP Seafood for lunch and I didn't see anyone I know along the way, and I thought, "Great, I am such a loser..."
But then later in the day, while driving to my place from Centre street, I saw two people I knew, so I think that kinda makes up for it and the universe is thus still in balance...Phew!
